The Many Names of Death
Over history, Death has gone by many names, most prominent among them being Mors in Rome, Thanatos in Greece, Azrael in Arabia, Yama in Hindu Culture, Cer (the only feminine name from Western Mythology) and many more. Death itself is not particular as to what it is called, however, most Psychopomps refer to Death as Erebus, which translates from Greek, meaning 'Darkness', who was in Greek mythology the father of Thanatos and Hypnos, as they themselves are made up of Darkness, this may simply be their way of attempting to connect themselves to their Creator of Creators.
Death is known to appear to each being in a different form, each unique to become the embodiment of what that individual believes Death truly to be in their hearts. As such, many Psychopomps will depict Death in different lights when pried for details on Death, Marius the Unliving is known to frequently refer to Death in the feminine, using terms such as "My Queen" and "She", never using the term Erebus.
These differences in appearence has sparked many debates among the Psychopomps themselves, most taking place in the Dead Regions of Space. A region where they have nearly unlimited time to argue their side. Such arguments are known to have lasted millennia, and many undoubtedly continue to this day.

Psychopomps (from the Greek word ψυχοπομπός (psychopompos), literally meaning the "guide of souls") are commonly found throughout religion, often as a spirit, deity, angel, or the like, and are charged by Death with the responsibility of escorting recently deceased souls to their afterlife. Their role is not to judge the deceased, but simply provide safe passage. There are two types of Psychopomps, ones that escort the soul into the realm of the living (at birth) and ones that escort souls into the realm of the dead (at death).
Psychopomps are mediators between the unconscious and conscious realms, and as such, do not truly exist in the conventional way. They are made up of “Matter Memory,” and are not actually tangible in any form, many were once mortals, that have ascended through various means, some particularly ancient ones, however, were created by Death Herself when life first began. Psychopomp ascension is rare, and can be of any species at any walk of life (or death for that matter), but one thing is universal, no Psychopomp in existence today has a soul. The reasons are unclear, and there are several theories whispered among the Ancient Constructs, the first Psychopomps.
A Psychopomp can never lose focus, if one does, they will simply dissipate out of existence. As such, most of the Ancients keep themselves far removed from the Universe at large. Psychopomps, as they do not actually exist in the sense known to others, must embed themselves into another’s psyche in order to communicate, this is a rare practice, and a dying art, as most mortals subject to such a phenomena assume they have gone mad and, usually, do go mad afterwards.
Psychopomps understand their place in the Grand Works of Things, and are careful not to interfere with those Works. All Psychopomps on some level or another are sworn to seek out and uphold Death and all Her Works.
